The 19th century was an era of expansion in America, and the legacy of slavery would be contested among supporters of slavery and abolitionists (Sayre, 2011). Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was an African American woman who escaped slavery from the North East who spoke against racial inequalities and delivered a speech to the Ohio Women’s Right Convention in 1851 on the rights.
