Discussion 3 An advantage of leasing that was discussed in the past is that operating leases in particular were considered off-balance sheet items (i.e. the liabilities were not listed on the balance sheet). The advantage here is that it was possible for a firm to obtain more leverage than it otherwise could have. What are some of the pros and cons of having leases capitalized and listed on the balance sheet vs. having them continue as off balance sheet items?
