The journey towards realization of the agency started when Martha Washington and Dorcas Society established the Cleveland Orphan Asylum to cater for the needs of orphaned, vulnerable and destitute children (Beech Brook, 2013). The agency first took in eleven children who were housed in a rented House at the corner of Erie now East 9th Street. Nonetheless, towards the turn of the century, the orphanage was surrounded by factories, and in 1916, Jeptha Homer Wade, Jr. and his wife gave the Beech Brook farm to the orphanage (Beech Brook, 2013).
