The sculpture is believed to represent a mother goddess of the people of Huastec who are presently found in Veracruz in Mexico. The goddess was adopted as Tlazolteotl in Maya language a name originating from tlazolli (fifth) and teotl (deity). It was a representation of sexual impurity and any behavior that was considered sinful and the Tlazolteotl was believed to have the ability to tempt and absolve impurities and sins via confession to a priest.The statue is 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide and 6 inches thick. The carving was done from one stone piece and the carvers utilized basic tools that contributed to the use of the basic straight geometric shapes and lines. Such slab like structures were extremely popular in Huasteca and believed that the female deities had a large following.
