The sculpture is believed to represent a mother goddess of the people of Huastec who are presently found in Veracruz in Mexico. The goddess was adopted as Tlazolteotl in Maya language a name originating from tlazolli (fifth) and teotl (deity). It was a representation of sexual impurity and any behavior that was considered sinful and the Tlazolteotl was believed to have the ability to tempt and absolve impurities and sins via confession to a priest.The statue is 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide and 6 inches thick. The carving was done from one stone piece and the carvers utilized basic tools that contributed to the use of the basic straight geometric shapes and lines.
