Synthesis Paper: What Should We Eat. Escape from the Western Diet by Michael Pollan

INSTRUCTIONS:

Synthesis Paper

Assignment: Compose an argumentative synthesis using materials from either the “What Should We Eat?” or “What’s Up with the American Dream?” chapters. Make sure your synthesis meets the following guidelines:

 - Briefly summarize the sources being used.

 - The synthesis should effectively show the relationship between the sources. The sources must include at least 2 readings from one of the assigned chapters listed above. You are not limited to the assigned readings, but you must synthesize at least 2 articles from one of the units covered in class (“What Should We Eat?” or “What’s Up with the American Dream?”).

 - You must create a claim that is persuasive in nature and effectively argue your claim using appropriate support. Appropriate support does not include popular websites or dictionary definitions. Remember to define key terms, use information fairly, and argue logically, not fallaciously.

 - Use a tone that is appropriate for an academic argument. This means a semi-formal tone that avoids personal pronouns.

 - You should have an appropriate title that fits the topic of the synthesis.

 - Use a minimum of 2 resources and a maximum of 5. Using the articles in the book is perfectly fine (remember that they are selections in an anthology or edited collection for citation purposes); you do not necessarily have to go out and do more research. Remember to use both in-text and works cited citations.
