For response post :
An authoritarian government is a form of government base on the principle of conformity that opposes any one individual freedom and their action. The risk of an emergence authoritarian presidency in America will be another revolutionary war. Tyranny or a dictatorship will appear, but do we want a dictatorship government? As frustrated as the citizens of today are by the magnitude, of our economic crises, the politicians and our presidency I wouldn’t be surprised if one try to emerge. And Authoritarian government will not allow freedom of press, speech, or religion, and they do not follow majority rule nor will they protect minority rights, it will shutter the civil rights of its citizens and deal violently with vocal protesters. They will control every aspect of life, and there will be no more Constitutional rights. The freedom to create an opposition in which to participate for power with the ruling group is nonexistent in an authoritarian regime. To my understanding our government was built on Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, our citizens will not be prepared, and be caught off guard when destruction strikes. Think about what you would be given up as an American citizen.
When I first read the discussion question I laughed. I thought, “Obama an authoritarian president…not with this congress.” After much thought and talking to others about this, I got a better idea about the possibility. The media (mostly right wing) has many people convinced that Obama is already an authoritarian President, the second he flexes any executive powers. This could not be farther from the truth. Yes there is a risk and there always will be, never say say never. Just look at world history and Russia. It can happen, but between the electoral system and modern media; our checks and balances there is not much a president can do.
The main risk or concern that is happening this very day, is how citizens are not involved in our government. People have fought for the right to vote and many people do not feel that it matters today. Tony Benn said “People in dept become hopeless and hopeless people don’t vote.” He has a point, many American citizens are in dept and many people do not vote. Our government no longer represents the people it is supposed to serve. This in turn formed a government that represents cooperation’s interest (yep, Cooperation’s are people too…Mitt said that) and the wealthy. It’s not the risk of a authoritarian President that we should be concerned about.
