The European Union governance system is largely unique compared to the national political governance systems in that its distribution of power is widely fragmented across various institutions. The institutions are established under the Article 13 of the Treaty on European Union that entered into force in 2009, following the 2007 Treaty of Lisbon. The current treaty on European Union succeeded the earlier one formed following the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992.
