The idea of religious liberty was taken more seriously when the diversity of American religion was enhanced to a great extent by the Revolution that was taking place in the country. The Great Awakening that was characterized by religious revival was made possible by the fact that religious liberty was allowed in the country even before independence. There was a great evangelical movement in the country during the Great Awakening period under the leadership of George Whitefield and this gave rise to new ideas such spiritual liberty (Balmer, 2015).
