According to the American Psychological Association (2010), the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct establish enforceable rules for conduct as psychologists. The Ethical Standards are written in such a way as to apply to psychologists in various roles and cover the areas of counseling, research, teaching, policy development, and organizational consulting; to name a few.
While ethics can be considered as moral guidelines to follow and respect, especially in the field of psychology, they can also be a source of conflict. How does a psychologist reconcile the legal issue of patient privacy when called upon to testify against a patient in a court of law? If a patient is a danger to himself or to others, how does a counselor address the need to notify the proper authorities?
