Introduction
The European Union governance system is largely unique compared to the national political governance systems in that its distribution of power is widely fragmented across various institutions. The institutions are established under the Article 13 of the Treaty on European Union that entered into force in 2009, following the 2007 Treaty of Lisbon. The current treaty on European Union succeeded the earlier one formed following the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992. The institutional framework established by the EU is aimed at defending and promoting interests, objectives, and values of the entire union as well as those of the citizens of the member countries.
