When the Mets’ slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes decided in 2011 that he wanted to leave his country to play baseball in the United States, he did what dozens of Cuban baseball players have done since the Castro government came to power more than 50 years ago.

Risking arrest as well as their lives, Mr. Cespedes and 10 members of his family fled the island in the middle of the night on a small boat. Twenty-three hours later, they arrived in the Dominican Republic. He then defected, setting him on the road to a multimillion-dollar contract with a major-league team. At least one relative who remained in Cuba was jail, and Mr. Cespedes has never returned home.

Introduction



Before the Castro government got into power in 1959, baseball players from Cuba used to play in the American Negro Leagues and in Major League Baseball (MLB). However, following the revolution, the government ended professional baseball in Cuba and forbade Cuban players to play abroad. This issue is of grave important because over the years, it has forced many players to find other alternative methods such as traveling in the Atlantic sea in the middle of the night on small boats just to get to the United States. In addition, it has forced the US and Cuba into trade talks for baseball players. Despite the differing opinions many people may have about the issue, it is my intention to show that, for many baseball players from Cuba, getting a chance to realize their dream of playing in the Major League in America is worth risking their life, arrest and defections from international competitions.
