This assignment not only requires you to consider what socio-linguists have to say about cross-cultural communication; it also encourages you to undertake some cross-cultural communication by consulting with a speaker of another language about a situation which involves more than one language and culture. Details: * Investigate the language use of a bi- or multi-lingual person known to you. Your description of their language use might include: • domains of language use • speech and social networks • code-switching • diglossia • rules for interaction and cultural norms and any other factors relevant to your chosen community, eg. age, gender, social status. Your investigation should be informed by the readings you have done for this unit and you should interview the person and observe some of their daily interactions. The Holmes, J. book " An introduction to sociolinuistics" (third edition 2008) will provide examples of how you could present some of the information you collect in the form of charts and diagrams where appropriate.
