Crowdfunding is the quickest way to create a startup business or the easiest way to scam. The issue of crowdfunding exists for individuals who provide a service, new product, scientists and researchers, engineers, and a plethora of individuals who want someone else to believe in what they can provide, build, or create; however, it also presents the risk from fraudulent activity and leave many people with nothing to show for their investment. This is true because if you browse through the world wide web or television, you will find websites like GoFundMe, Kickstarter, and Shark Tank who all have a few things in common; a business owner; product, service, or research; and investors. You don’t have to look far or do much searching if you want to dive into the countless number of projects that are available to invest in through crowdfunding. This issue may have started with someone with a great idea and no way to mass produce it or let the general public know that it was available, and limited access to funds or resources to bring their idea from paper to reality. “In 1876, crowdfunding was used to finance one of the United States’ most iconic monuments, the Statue of Liberty. The citizens of France paid for the statue, and the citizens of the United States paid for the pedestal. Citizens in both countries held meetings, theater performances, art auctions, prizefights, and rallies to raise money. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty’s architect, offered a miniature version of the statue with the name of the buyer engraved on it in exchange for a donation—a “perk” when compared to today’s crowdfunding. Despite being $250,000 short, newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer used The World, a New York City daily newspaper, to mount a fund drive, promising to print the name of each donor. Pulitzer’s plan worked and millions of people around the country began donating whatever they could including a kindergarten class in Iowa that sent $1.35. Why? Because these people believed in the project and wanted to give back; they wanted to be a part of history and be a part of something bigger than themselves. These are the same reasons people give to crowdfunding today. Times might have changed but core beliefs have not.” (Dresner, 2014). If crowdfunding becomes the quickest way to start your project or the fastest way to scam someone then more laws will begin to change the way people can invest and it may be more difficult in the future. I think that crowdfunding is being used for good things and hope that it expands more throughout the next few years. There are a lot of ideas that need to be seen and used by the world and crowdfunding is the best way to get it out there.

Topic: Stem cell research
Stem cell research has been an important subject in medical research. However, with strict guidelines and policies from the U.S. federal, researchers have encountered many hardships in obtaining the funds and facing significant ethical issues when studying stem cells. According to the Stem cell research center at the University of Michigan, Stem cell research, which involved the study of embryonic stem cell, adult stem cell, and IPS (induced pluripotent stem) cell, may develop effective treatments for varieties of diseases such as heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, and type I diabetic, and many more. Historically, stem cell research has been successfully applied in medical through bone marrow transplants and in regenerative medicine markets. Currently, a new study from the National Toxicology Program, a Division of National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences demonstrated that stem cell can slow down the growth of cancer cells in patients with prostate cancer (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, 2018).
Despite the potential benefits gained through stem cell research, the lack of federal funding creates obstacles for scientists to move forward in stem cell studies. The National Health Institute should make effort along with government support to give grants to scientists and researchers who dedicated their works in the field of stem cell research.
